Gemstone Descriptions
Gemstones often may be identified as a group, species or variety. A group is composed of a number of closely related species. "Garnet" is an example of a group name. A species name refers to a mineral with a characteristic crystal structure and chemical composition.
Trade names are often given to gemstones. "Tsavorite" for example, is a trade name that is shorter and more marketable than "transparent green grossular", which is technically a more correct term. Misnomers are names which do not correctly identify a gem.
Refractive Index (RI): the degree to which light is bent as it passes through the stone.
Hardness: the resistance of a gem to scratching and abrasion.
Toughness: the resistance of a gem to breaking, chipping, or cracking.
Cleavage: A gemstone may have one or more directions of cleavage.
Specific Gravity: the ratio of a gem's density to the density of water.
